For years, Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley have been well-known for their amusing on-air relationship on Inside the NBA, where they frequently joke about and play practical jokes on one another. Perhaps the most hilarious part of the now-former NBA on TNT show is the two of them joking about. Also, the two have been friends all along; one would say they argue like brothers, but they aren’t.
However, arguing, frequently joking, and teasing each other on air runs in the family. In a recent revelation, Shaquille O’Neal opened up on how ‘close’ his and Barkley’s moms were. O’Neal claimed that he and Barkley’s mom shared the same relationship as their sons did. Both the moms would laugh, argue, and joke around, but would never disrespect each other, just like O’Neal and Barkley, the former NBA player stressed.
My momma used to be the president of the mothers of the NBA, so we got to our house and it’s all the top guys’ moms are there and they playing spades. My mom, his (Charles Barkley’s) mom, talking Sh**….same thing me and him do. But as I’m watching them, same thing we could go crazy with each other, but I’ll never disrespect y’all. I see that they are arguing, having a good time, but they never disrespect each other.

Charles Barkley & Shaquille O’Neal argue like brothers. Though they aren’t, they might as well be because their mothers have been tight for years. So tight, that both ladies got their sons on the phone after they got into a fist fight on the court. @SHAQ didn’t know how tight… pic.twitter.com/VInvamD3Ui

This showcases that the two NBA Hall of Famers share a great family-like bond on and off the court. By opposing one another, they have provided fans with several unforgettable events over the years. There is only love and respect between them, despite the appearance that they are constantly attempting to belittle one another.
Shaq claimed that people frequently inquire as to whether he despises Chuck, and the big man used this chance to dispel that myth. “I don’t hate Barkley and I never will,” he remarked. He also revealed that his father encouraged Shaq to learn his game like Barkley when he was training him. This showcases how much he values Chuck despite the two joking around on the show.
In addition, this was not the only story involving the two superstars and their moms. For instance, Chuck was once left annoyed with Shaq for not controlling his mom, Lucille O’Neal‘s, expenses on the trip with Barkley’s mom. Chuck claimed that he wanted to ‘kill’ O’Neal as “he didn’t make 1/3rd of the money Shaq made.”
Shaquille O’Neal opened up on the 1999 on-court fight with Charles Barkley, with both their moms intervening
Shaquille O’Neal once shared a wholesome story in an interview with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He recalled how his mother, Lucille O’Neal, and Barkley’s mother, Charcey Glenn, who were best friends at the time, made the NBA legends make amends shortly after they got into a physical altercation(threw punches) at a Lakers vs. Rockets game in 1999, more than 20 years ago.
So on two-way was my mom and Charles Barkley’s mom, And I was like, ‘Hello?’ and she’s like, ‘This is Charles’ mom and your mom’s on the phone too.’ I was like, ‘Yes ma’am, how are you?’ She said, ‘Y’all need to stop. I already talked to Charles. He’s gonna meet you in the hallway. Y’all need to stop and hug. Y’all are two of the greatest players in the world, we don’t want y’all fighting in front of the kids, y’all stop that.’

O’Neal did not waste any time and listened to Barkley’s mom. He added that the two stars ‘hugged it out’ in the hallway after the call. These remarks themselves showcase how close both the moms were. Sadly for Barkley, his mom, Glenn, passed away at the age of 73 in 2015. Aside from this, Barkley exited the NBA in 2000 after 26 years of play, whereas O’Neal started his career in 1992 and retired in 2011.
Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley’s bond grew stronger after their NBA careers
After retiring in 2000, Barkley joined the Inside the NBA team right away. However, the show didn’t really achieve its peak until Shaq entered the cast in 2011. Over the years, Shaq and Chuck have engaged in scores of intense, funny, and widely shared “fights” on television, making the program a favorite among viewers.
Shaq frequently makes fun of Barkley for his lack of titles and weight, and the two are always making fun of one another. However, Barkley has always been able to stab him back, frequently with witty insults or even physical humor. Both have expressed their mutual regard for one another, despite their playful demeanor while the cameras are rolling.

One would say that their way of joking and insulting each other is what makes their bond stronger each day. Also, as mentioned above, it runs in the family for the two former basketball players, regarding their funny and witty nature.
